Mother's Day is a special time to honor the amazing women who have shaped our lives. It's a chance to show gratitude and love for all the care and support mothers give. Whether with a card, a gift, or spending time together, it's an opportunity to celebrate and cherish our moms. How are you celebrating Mother's Day this year?

History of Mother’s day

Mother's Day has a rich history that dates back to ancient times, but the modern version of the holiday originated in the early 20th century in the United States.

1. Ancient Roots

The concept of honoring mothers has roots in ancient civilizations. Greeks and Romans held festivals to honor maternal goddesses like Rhea and Cybele.

2. Early Christian Influence

Early Christians in the UK had a day called "Mothering Sunday," which was originally a religious holiday to honor the Virgin Mary. Over time, it evolved into a more secular celebration where people would return to their "mother" church and spend time with their mothers.

3. Modern Beginnings in the United States

The modern Mother's Day movement in the United States can be credited to Anna Jarvis. After her own mother's death in 1905, Anna campaigned for a day to honor mothers and their sacrifices.

5. Official Recognition

Anna Jarvis tirelessly campaigned for Mother's Day to be recognized as a national holiday, and in 1914, President Woodrow Wilson signed a proclamation designating the second Sunday in May as Mother's Day.

6. Commercialization and Controversy

Over time, Mother's Day became increasingly commercialized, much to Anna Jarvis's dismay. She had envisioned it as a day of personal celebration and reflection, rather than a commercial enterprise.

7. International Spread

Mother's Day celebrations spread to other countries around the world, each adopting its own traditions and customs. While the dates and customs may vary, the sentiment of honoring mothers remains universal.
